What is a crown?

A crown can best be described as an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of your tooth (after the dentist has prepared the tooth), making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. You will probably be aware that a crown is sometimes also known as a ‘cap’.

Crowns can be made of a variety of different materials and new materials are continually being introduced. The most common type is porcelain bonded to metal, a metal base is made and then porcelain is applied over this.

All ceramic crowns can be just as strong with modern materials, and can give a better cosmetic result. These are especially popular for front teeth, but can be used throughout your mouth.

Consultation

Your dentist will examine you and discuss any options available.

Preparation

Your tooth is carefully prepared to accept a crown, an impression taken, and a temporary crown fitted.

Fit

The temporary is removed and the new crown tried in. Once your dentist and you are happy it is cemented securely into place.

Well maintained crowns can last over 20 years.

Crowns have historically been used to restore teeth where at least the root is still present in the mouth. However nowadays crowns can be used to restore dental implants where a tooth is missing.
